Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 internet users aged 15 to 29 have been cyberbullied? Gone are the days when your home was a refuge from the school bullies; the internet has become the new schoolyard for bullying and everyone is a target. In today’s world, people are using the internet as a way to harass their peers online through cyberbullying. These “digital bullies” can hide behind a mask of anonymity, making them nearly impossible to identify. Web pages, emails and social media sites have become their hunting grounds, and unfortunately, the victim count continues to rise.
We want to share some tips on how to protect yourself and your family from virtual predators and stay safe online!
Tip #1: Make sure your passwords are not too obvious and change them regularly.
Tip #2: Sharing is not always caring; remember to keep your personal information to yourself.
Tip #3: Do not click on links or reply to emails that look suspicious.
Tip #4: Whether you are banking online or surfing your social network sites, always remember to log out.
Tip #5: Always use the privacy features on social media.
Tip #6: Do not share private information online.
Tip #7: Think twice before posting photos of yourself online. Once a picture is online it is accessible to anyone.
Tip #8: Block users that send you nasty messages or emails.
Tip #9: Google yourself every now and again to see what personal information is public online.
