Hansen’s journey began with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets at age 12, where he earned his glider wings at 16 and a private pilot license at 17. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in space science and a master’s in physics from the Royal Military College of Canada, specializing in wide field-of-view satellite tracking. A decorated Royal Canadian Air Force colonel and CF‑18 fighter pilot, he has led NORAD-related combat operations and Arctic flying exercises, bringing deep operational experience to Artemis II.![]()

Since being selected as a CSA astronaut in 2009, Hansen has supported International Space Station missions as a capcom, lived underground in ESA’s CAVES program, and spent a week on the ocean floor with NASA’s NEEMO 19 mission to simulate deep-space exploration. He later became the first Canadian to lead a NASA astronaut class, overseeing the training of a new generation of explorers.![]()
